Role Description

Chief Executive Officer

Location: Fully remote-working, with regular travel across the UK, with ability to commute to London on a regular basis.

Salary: £110,000 to £130,000 per annum


Key Responsibilities

Leadership 

  • Lead a values-driven organisational culture of shared learning and co-operation which is committed to improvement and high standards.

  • Provide visible, inspirational and data-led leadership for UKCF that will in turn empower and support community foundations, their chairs and trustees, and a range of external stakeholders.

  • Lead the development and delivery of UKCF’s vision and strategic objectives needed to be innovative and proactive in planning and delivering member services.

  • Be a passionate advocate for the work of community foundations, the generosity of donors and the outstanding work of the voluntary and community groups who are supported by the network. 

Strategy 

  • Work with the Board, SMT and other key stakeholders to deliver and build upon UKCF's strategy and ensure it maximises the opportunities of new governmental policies.

  • Lead a financially sound organisation, working with staff to produce, review and revise UKCF’s medium term financial plan, annual business plans and operational capabilities.

  • Ensure that appropriate resources, data and operational systems are available to turn strategy into reality.

  • Harness members’ local data and impact to inform new ideas that could provide strategic benefit to UKCF and across the network.

  • Demonstrate the impact of the investment in communities by UKCF and members to influence nationally.

External Relations 

  • Maintain and develop strong relationships across the membership.

  • Enhance external stakeholder relationships to build voice and reputation.

  • Lead an advocacy and influencing strategy that ensures UKCF demonstrates positive outcomes for members and their communities.

  • Raise the impact of the work of UKCF and the network across the UK with policy makers, politicians, sector partners, trade bodies including professional advisors, high net worth individuals, businesses, other potential significant donors, the public and the media.

  • Build and maintain a network of contacts across charities, local authorities, government bodies, senior civil servants, think tanks and other agencies of shared interest to ensure UKCF remains informed of developments and can maximise opportunities.

  • Immersion in the existing and emerging landscape of philanthropy.

Business Development

  • Manage a sustainable financial strategy and business model for UKCF.

  • Work with relevant staff, the Chair, Board committees and members to identify opportunities to develop and grow:

    • UKCF’s long term income generation capacity

    • National partnerships which will benefit members

    • Endowment and grant programmes that will benefit the network

    • Relationships with current and prospective donors.

Governance

  • Maintain the highest standards of conduct and integrity.

  • Oversee key financial responsibilities, reporting and monitoring.

  • Work effectively with the Chair and other Board members who lead Board committees so that the Board has access to high-quality and timely information.


Person Specification

Experience

  • Strong people management skills, with clear experience of building and supporting a diverse, high performing team and culture.

  • Working successfully with Boards and an understanding of effective governance.

  • Strategic leadership of an organisation that exists to add value to a diverse membership, network or similar structure.

  • Evidence of delivering impactful, inclusive change with a result orientated and collaborative approach.

  • Acting as a key external ambassador, able to influence at high levels across Parliament, the civil service, the private sector, civil society and the media.

  • Track record of stakeholder engagement and relationship management strategies in complex, hybrid organisations.

  • Financial management, business development and governance.

Skills, Ability and Knowledge

  • Inspirational communicator, able to build rapport quickly, gain trust and respect divergent opinions.

  • Able to build consensus and move strategies and operations forward on time and to budget.

  • Good understanding of the impact and potential that community foundations can deliver through active philanthropy, giving and grant-making.

  • Appreciation of the complexity and needs of different members across the UK.

  • Able to lead - with dexterity and clarity - a complex and high-profile organisation.
