Role description
Chief Executive Officer
Salary: £85,000 - £90,000 pa
Responsible to: the Board of Trustees. Line managed by the Chair on behalf of the Board.
Location: 3 days a week at the RMBF office in Wimbledon, with the option to work from home for up to two days a week.
Direct reports: RMBF senior managers (Head of Casework, Head of Finance & IT, Head of Fundraising & Communications, Admin Manager & Committee Secretary).
Main Purpose: To provide leadership to the charity and to be responsible for the overall direction and management of all key aspects of the charity. To support the Chair and the Board of Trustees to fulfil their duties and responsibilities for the proper governance of the charity.
Key responsibilities
Leadership and Strategy
Lead, inspire and motivate the staff and volunteers to deliver the charity’s mission.
In partnership with the Chair, to ensure that the Trustees set the values, mission, strategic objectives and strategic priorities for the charity.
Develop and grow the organisation to maximise its reach and impact.
Ensure the organisation is constantly seeking ways to learn and to improve its performance.
Represent the charity externally, ensuring the charity is widely respected and grow its profile in the profession.
To build external partnerships to further charity’s objectives.
To use the charity’s specialist knowledge to inform advocacy for improved support for the charity’s beneficiary groups.
Management
Be accountable to the Board for the proper and effective management of the charity.
Ensure that management structures, systems and processes are in place to support the effective delivery of the charity’s objectives.
Line manage and support the senior staff team through regular supervisions and all staff team meetings.
Develop the staff and volunteer teams to deliver and fulfil their potential.
Support the Grants and Awards Committee to ensure that the charity is best placed to support the charity’s beneficiary groups, and to reach those in need of help.
Scan the external environment for changes that may affect the charity, to advise the trustees proactively and to take necessary action.
Finance and Risk Management
Be responsible overall for the financial health of the charity including an effective programme of income generation, budgetary monitoring and cost controls.
Support the Finance Committee and Honorary Investment Advisers to ensure that the charity’s investments are delivering the required returns.
Ensure that the major risks to which the charity is exposed are reviewed regularly by the Board and the executive team and that systems have been established to mitigate these risks.
Ensure the robustness of financial procedures and controls.
Work with the external auditors to ensure good financial management is in place across the organisation.
Legal and regulatory compliance
Ensure that the charity fulfils all its legal, statutory and regulatory responsibilities.
Work with the Compliance Committee to protect the charity’s reputation and resources, overseeing legal compliance, health and safety, and risk management.
Working with the Staffing Committee to ensure HR employment policies and practices fulfil all legal requirements and demonstrate good practice.
Together with the Chair, to enable the Board of Trustees to fulfil its duties and responsibilities for the proper governance of the charity.
Recommend to the trustees any actions that they may be required to take to ensure that the RMBF continues to be compliant with statutory regulatory requirements.
Governance
Ensure that the Board are fully informed on all areas of good charity governance and good practice.
Support the Nominations Committee to ensure that the RMBF Board and associated Committees have the appropriate balance of skills, experience, independence, and diversity to enable them to operate effectively.
Ensure that the Board and its Committees act within the RMBF’s Articles and Rules, within the requirements of the Charity Commission and other legal requirements, and taking advice, as appropriate, from the RMBF’s professional advisers and externally when required.
Person specification
Essential Skills and Experience
Proven experience as a CEO or similar executive leadership position.
Strong strategic and operational acumen.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to build positive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
Track record of successfully leading teams and driving growth.
Strong financial acumen and financial management experience at senior level
A collaborative management style
An understanding of the demands faced by doctors and medical students in the current NHS
An understanding of charity governance
Desirable
Experience of benevolent funds, and/or charity management
Knowledge of the medical profession and the NHS
Experience of volunteer management
Experience of investment management
Media experience
